The GPA Calculator computes your Grade Point Average on the standard 4.0 scale used by most colleges and universities. Enter your courses, grades, and credit hours to calculate your semester GPA, cumulative GPA, or plan future semesters to reach your target GPA.
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is one of the most important academic metrics. It's used for scholarship eligibility, graduate school admissions, academic honors (Dean's List, Cum Laude), academic probation thresholds, and even job applications. Understanding how GPA is calculated helps you strategize course selection and prioritize study time.
How the Formula Works
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours. Each letter grade maps to a numeric value on the 4.0 scale.
Step 1: Convert each letter grade to its point value
Step 2: Multiply grade points by credit hours for each course (= quality points)
Step 3: Sum all quality points
Step 4: Divide by total credit hours
How to Use This Calculator
Add each course with its name and number of credit hours
Select the letter grade received for each course
View your calculated semester GPA
Add previous semester data for cumulative GPA
Tips & Best Practices
Higher-credit courses affect your GPA more — prioritize studying for 4-credit classes
An A in a 4-credit course has the same GPA impact as an A in four 1-credit courses
Check if your school allows grade replacement for retaken courses
A GPA above 3.0 is generally considered 'good,' above 3.5 is 'very good,' above 3.7 is 'excellent'
Important Limitations
GPA scales vary by institution — some use +/- grades, others don't
Pass/Fail courses typically don't affect GPA
Transfer credits may not factor into your GPA at the new institution
Does not account for weighted GPA systems (AP/IB/Honors)
