The ROI (Return on Investment) Calculator measures the profitability of an investment relative to its cost. ROI is popular because of its simplicity and versatility. A positive ROI means the investment gained more than it cost; a negative ROI means it lost money. How the Formula Works

ROI = ((Gain from Investment − Cost of Investment) ÷ Cost of Investment) × 100. Annualized ROI = ((1 + ROI)^(1/years) − 1) × 100.

  • Net Profit = Final Value − Initial Investment
  • ROI (%) = (Net Profit ÷ Initial Investment) × 100
  • Annualized ROI = ((Final Value ÷ Initial Value)^(1/years) − 1) × 100

Important Limitations

  • Does not account for the time value of money (a dollar today is worth more than a dollar in the future)
  • Does not factor in risk — a 10% guaranteed return is very different from a 10% average with high volatility
  • Can be misleading if all costs are not included in the calculation
  • Does not account for opportunity cost (what else you could have done with the money)
